Chris Hemsworth is launching his latest Thor outing at home.
The Hollywood actor will appear at the Australian premiere of Thor: Ragnarok next month on the Gold Coast, where it was predominantly filmed, just a hop, skip and a jump away from his own home just outside of Byron Bay.
He will be joined on the red carpet by the film’s director, Taika Waititi.
It’s the first time the New Zealand director has been at the helm of a Hollywood superhero film.
Before this, Waititi was known for his quirky comedies including last year’s hit Hunt for the Wilderpeople, the vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows and for his work with New Zealand comedy duo Flight of the Conchords.
In the Marvel universe, this will be Hemsworth’s fifth time playing the hammer-wielding Norse god, both in The Avengers movies and in the two previous stand-alone Thor films.
The latest Marvel Comics movie will follow Thor as he tries to stop the destruction of his home world Asgard, which is under threat from Hela the Goddess of Death played by Cate Blanchett.
The film also stars Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Idris Elba as Heimdall, another Norse god. Tom Hiddleston also returns as Thor’s estranged brother Loki.
Filming started last year, predominantly on the Gold Coast at Village Roadshow Studios, with Brisbane CBD standing in for New York.
